Shoulder Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Arthritis, or inflammation of the shoulder joint, can cause stiffness, pain and limit mobility. The shoulder is vital for both arm and hand movement and strength. Shoulder arthritis can make it difficult to perform many daily tasks and enjoy certain activities. If you have the symptoms of shoulder arthritis, early diagnosis and treatment can help slow the progression and improve your symptoms. Come see us at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine for effective treatments to alleviate shoulder pain and functional issues that come with shoulder arthritis.

The most common type of shoulder arthritis is osteoarthritis, a degenerative wearing down of the shoulder joint. Those who have previous shoulder injuries or repetitive shoulder strain are at higher risk of osteoarthritis. As the cartilage wears thin due to osteoarthritis, the joint friction can cause inflammation and pain. Some of the symptoms of shoulder arthritis include:

  • Stiffness in the shoulder joint
  • Limited range of motion when lifting or rotating the arm
  • Pain when using the arm, hand or shoulder
  • Swelling
  • A grinding or clicking sensation or sound when using the shoulder

Osteoarthritis will generally only affect one shoulder at a time. If both shoulders are experiencing symptoms, it could be rheumatoid arthritis or another condition.

Treatments for Shoulder Arthritis

Slowing the degeneration of the shoulder joint is the best way to preserve mobility and limit pain. Treatments can include cortisone or other steroid injections to relieve inflammation. Physical therapy can help improve mobility and strengthen the muscles controlling the shoulder joint. Our team at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine also offers regenerative medicine options that can help repair the joint.

If you have pain and stiffness in your shoulder joint, it may be signs of arthritis. Schedule an exam and consultation with one of our experienced pain doctors at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine. We have locations in the greater Atlanta area for arthritis treatment and pain management.

What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
