Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

The shoulder joint is a unique configuration, with muscles and tendons surrounded by bone. Most joint bones are under the muscles and tendons. The rotator cuff is located between the upper arm and top shoulder bone, limiting the amount of space for these muscles and tendons. A variety of issues can occur if the rotator cuff becomes injured or inflamed, including shoulder impingement syndrome. Our physicians at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine can help diagnose and treat shoulder impingement syndrome and other related shoulder injuries.

When there is a strain on the rotator cuff tendons, inflammation is a normal response. Due to the configuration of the shoulder joint, inflammation of the rotator cuff can push against the surrounding bone. This restricts the blood vessels and blood flow, causing tendon damage. It can result in shoulder impingement syndrome symptoms, including:

  • Aching pain in the shoulder
  • Shoulder weakness
  • Limited range of motion when reaching back and up
  • Pain when reaching or lifting the arms

Shoulder impingement syndrome is linked with shoulder bursitis and rotator cuff injuries. One or all three issues can occur at the same time.

Recovering from Shoulder Impingement

Treatment for shoulder impingement syndrome and related shoulder injuries is vital for recovery and to prevent further damage. Reducing swelling and inflammation is important to help restore blood flow to the tendons for repair. Our team at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine will create a personalized treatment plan to minimize pain, improve healing and regain mobility in the shoulder. This can include physical therapy, injections and regenerative medicine options.

If you have shoulder pain, weakness or limited mobility, contact Medici Orthopaedics & Spine at our locations in the greater Atlanta area to schedule your appointment. We can determine the cause of your shoulder condition and create a treatment plan to give you relief and improved function.

What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
