Facet Syndrome

Each intervertebral segment contains facet joints. These are the spinal joints that allow for bending and movement of the neck and back. Like any joint in the body, facet joints can be injured or damaged, resulting in pain or mobility issues. When pain, stiffness or mobility issues are caused by spinal joints, it can be classified as facet syndrome. Our medical team at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine can diagnose and treat facet syndrome for relief from the common symptoms of this condition.

Since every intervertebral segment has facet joints, any one of them could be injured or damaged. Causes of facet syndrome include degenerative disease, wear/tear, poor posture, repetitive strain or injuries. Sitting in the same position for long periods of time, whiplash from car accidents and workplace injuries are common causes of facet syndrome.

Symptoms and Treatments for Facet Syndrome

Symptoms of facet syndrome are related to the facet joints affected. Facet syndrome can affect any area of the spine, including the neck (cervical), upper/middle back (thoracic) and lower back (lumbar). Symptoms vary from patient to patient but can include:

  • Increased back or neck pain after sitting or standing for long periods
  • Pain or stiffness in the back or neck when attempting certain positions
  • More pain in the morning that diffuses with movement throughout the day
  • Pain in the buttocks, groin and hamstrings (back of the thigh)

Facet syndrome, like most joint issues, can be worsened with inflammation. Treatments focus on reducing inflammation through injections or medication management. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and soft tissue manipulation can also be effective in correcting poor posture, ergonomics and other factors that contribute to facet syndrome pain. Our pain experts at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine will help create a personalized treatment plan for facet syndrome to provide improved mobility and pain relief for patients.

What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
