Medial Branch Blocks

Medial branch nerves supply sensation to the facet joints in the spine. If there is inflammation in the facet joints, these nerves can be irritated, causing back or neck pain. Facet joints are between all vertebrae in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, and each has medial branch nerves. Medial branch block injections can be used for both diagnostic purposes and pain relief. This non-invasive treatment is available at Medici Orthopaedics & Spine, with locations in the Atlanta area.

Medial branch nerve pain is usually due to deterioration or damage to the facet joints. Diagnosing the cause of back pain can be complicated, as many different issues can cause pain in the same areas. Medial branch block injections use a local anesthetic to numb the area and a steroid to combat inflammation. If the injection is successful in controlling pain, it can help in devising a long-term treatment plan to address the damage to the affected facet joints.

Relieving Facet Joint Pain

Medial branch block injections can be effective at managing pain caused by nerve irritation inside facet joints. Facet joint pain is often a result of arthritis or other deterioration in the joints. The injections are usually used on one or more facet joints in the same area to relieve pain and help with the diagnosis of spinal issues. The injections are guided with x-rays to ensure precise delivery of the steroid medication. The anesthetic can provide immediate pain relief, but the steroid may require 2-3 days or more to relieve inflammation and nerve irritation.

If you have neck or back pain that is related to facet joint deterioration, medial branch block injections can be used to help diagnose facet joint inflammation and offer temporary relief. We provide injection therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for patients with chronic back or neck pain. What our patients say

Kevin Madden

Love Dr. Sonny and his practice. I appreciate the time he takes with me. I would rather him run late and take his time with me than rush me through. Pain is not something that’s a pleasure to deal with. I appreciate his knowledge and compassion. The surgical center is great too. Their staff is so caring! Thank you Dr. Sonny!

Dr. Sonny and his staff are incredibly compassionate. They offer solutions that promote healing and support a healthy lifestyle. I trust them because I see the results in my life but mostly because they care. They know me by name. I cannot recommend this practice enough.
